1:72 scale F-16 kits by Monogram, Bluetank, Revell, Revell Germany

Like it's 1:48 scale big brother, two of the Monogram kits represent a curious mix of prototype and FSD (Full Scale Development) features. The third kit represents the single seat F-16XL-1 prototype. The differences in the three kits are described below.

  • Manufacturer Monogram
  • Kit # 5200
  • Date Released: 1977

  • Description: F-16A Fighting Falcon
  • Overall this kit is representative of an FSD F-16A but depicts the strake mold lines, smaller ventral fins and split nose gear door of the prototype YF-16.
  • One-piece canopy can only be built in the closed position.
  • Ejection seat is the Stencel III used only in the FSD aircraft.
  • Molded in white with raised panel lines.

  • Markings for FSD #1 F-16A, 75-0745, in red/white/blue "Rollout" markings

  • Manufacturer Monogram
  • Kit # 5504
  • Date Released: 1983

  • Description: F-16A Fighting Falcon Thunderbirds
  • This is a set four F-16 kits in one box.
  • The nose and main gear doors are molded closed and the horizontal stabilizers are the larger type first introduced on Block 15 production aircraft. All the other prototype features described above remain.
  • The Thunderbird markings are somewhat incomplete and require painting the lower center fuselage to match the blue decals.
  • Includes a clear stand to pose the kits in an in-flight diamond formation.
  • Molded in white with raised panel lines.

  • Markings for USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, #s 1 thru 6

  • Manufacturer Monogram
  • Kit # 5206
  • Date Released: 1983

  • Description: F-16XL Fighter
  • Out of the box this kit is (almost) an F-16XL-1
  • There are serious issues with the overall accuracy of this kit but it is the only F-16XL kit available in 1:72. The kit was probably based on early drawings done before the design was finalized. Even with all the problems the kit is still more accurate than the 1:32 F-16XL version released by several different companies.
    - the XL was lengthened with two fuselage plugs but they are in the 'wrong' place on the kit.
    - this results in the intake and nose gear too far forward, and the main gear too far aft.
    - the rear fuselage lacks the 3 degree upward cant, resulting in the fuselage profile being all wrong from the side.
    - wing store locations are incorrect, and the gun muzzle is grossly oversized for an XL.
  • On the plus side the wing planform is correct and the cockpit is reasonably well detailed. The extended parabrake housing is included at the base of the vertical stabilizer.
  • External stores include six AIM-120s and two prototype style fuel tanks.
  • One piece canopy can only be built in the closed position, and is heavily tinted.
  • Molded in dark gray with raised panel lines.

  • Markings for F-16XL #1, USAF SerNo 75-0749, modified FSD airframe #5

  • Manufacturer Bluetank
  • Kit # 2018
  • Date Released: ???

  • Description: F-16A Fighting Falcon
  • Manufactured in Taiwan, this kit is a direct copy of the Monogram #5200 kit, right down to the part number on the decal sheet. The box art is copied from the Hasegawa 1:32 kit #S20.

One of the earliest F-16 kits released, the Revell kits represent an FSD F-16A. Includes an F100-PW engine, engine dolly and tow tug, 12 Mk82 bombs, 2 AIM-9s, early prototype-style fuel tanks and two ECM pods. The Revell-Germany kits have additional parts and superior decal sheets.

  • Manufacturer Revell
  • Kit # H-222
  • Date Released: 1976

  • Description: F-16A Fighting Falcon
  • Includes markings and paint schemes for the YF-16 prototypes (but incorrect serial numbers).
  • Speed brakes can be built open or closed.
  • Canopy can be positioned open or closed.
  • Ejection seat is generic, definitely not an ACES II.
  • Molded in white with heavily engraved panel lines.

  • (1) YF-16 #1, "07515", in red/white/blue "Rollout" markings
  • (2) YF-16 #2, "07516", in grey "Air Superiority" markings

  • Manufacturer Revell Germany

  • Description: F-16A Fighting Falcon "KLu"
  • Identical to the earlier Revell release, with new decals.
  • Molded in white with heavily engraved panel lines.

  • Royal Netherlands Air Force, "J-125"
J-125 is a ficticious RNAF tail number, but you can re-arrange the numbers to build J-215, a Block 01 F-16A or J-251, a Block 10 F-16A. J-512 is a Block 15 F-16A but modifications would have to be made to the kit to represent a Block 15.
