The PC-based Cockpit Project

All this simulator stuff at work was finally starting to bleed over into my home life, so I decided to build my own cockpit using existing PC-based commercially available flight simulator software.

Being a fan of the F-16, and the wealth of data available about the airplane I based my cockpit on that of the Viper. Many of the dimensions were scaled up from an old 1/12th scale model of an early (Block 10) F-16 cockpit, various books available on the F-16, and measurements taken from real F-16s.

After the drawings were complete, I constructed the entire cockpit from wood, mostly 2x4s, 2x2s, plywood and pressboard. I modified Thrustmaster controls (stick, throttle and rudder pedals) to interface with an R&R Electronics EPIC card, built some switch panels, and painted the whole thing gray. A 17" monitor tops off the front of the cockpit, a stereo amplifier is mounted in the left console, and the PC is behind the seat.

I have received numerous requests for plans and dimensions for my cockpit design. I estimated my dimensions from a number of sources and while they're probably darn close, they are not intended to be EXACT dimensions of a real F-16. Please don't write and tell me that, just because you have been in a real F-16, the hoohickey next to the whatchamacallit is 3.14159265 angstroms wider than what I have shown. These plans are provided as a STARTING POINT for your own cockpit design if you should choose to build one. Just remember - they're free and you get what you pay for !!! :) :) :) All I ask is that you give me credit on your web site if you use these plans.
