| A closer look through the HUD - you can see the runway and piano keys in the visual scene since runway isn't reflecting the radar signal. You can also make out the HUD symbology: the pitch ladder is made up of tick marks on either side of the HUD with a horizon line across the middle of the HUD field of view. The velocity vector indicator is on the desired touchdown spot on the runway. The bank indicator is at the top of the HUD, with vertical speed, barometric and radar altitudes shown in the lower corners of the display. There was also a lead/lag bar (not visible in this picture) to show the pilot if he was fast or slow or high or low on the approach. |
