A short New Year update from Sara Hickman for January 6, 2006!

hi, everybody!

happy new year! may blessings be in abundance for the entire world this year. i'm not kidding.

this is short. three items for your perusal:

1) come to Saxon Pub this monday, january 9, and hear me with my band... we are going by SARA HICKMAN'S SOUL PURPOSE. we play at 8:30. we would love to dedicate the song we wrote for you to you in person, but you can't hear what we sing about you unless you are there!

2) go to www.cafepress.com/sarahickman. you will see my slogan "it becomes apparent when you become a parent" on bumper stickers, mugs, postcards and tee shirts. and super pal universe tee shirts, too! support this wee lass and her little elves. more fun sara stuff to come.

3) i am working diligently on getting MOTHERLODE ready for it's official release date: MAY 9. yes, memorize that day. call your local club in your town and ask, "when is sara hickman coming to perform?" start calling your local radio stations and asking, "can i hear a sara hickman song?" this is how it works. you build the desire, and i will come and sing songs for you! yes, and i'll stay around afterwards and we'll chat and share the love. we'll get giddy wid it! (i will have NEW tee-shirts made for the MOTHERLODE tour!!! want one?)

sending love, truly...

sara

Campaign Kelli Baby Hats

in memory of Kelli Nemecek, these sparkling red baby hats are being sold to raise funds for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. the goal is 100 hats... but wouldn't 200 be fantastic? your contribution honors & commemorates the life of a very dear daughter, sister, wife, friend and loved one to many.

"She was a beautiful young woman from Dallas who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. For many, her face and words represented the story of the courage and conviction of all cancer patients and researchers. They, along with volunteers, friends and staff throughout the country, share a relentless pursuit for a cure."

- Dwayne Howell, President & CEO, Leukemia Lymphoma Society

For more information about battling blood cancers visit: http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org

An Update on Gracie

here is an update on gracie...remember the little girl who i wrote the song "i wish you well" for? well, she is doing great! Gracie's mom reports:

Gracie entered an art contest through the "Leukemia Lymphoma Society", and her drawing went to Capital Hill and will be used for future promotional items, I think a calendar. Her drawing was called "A Garden of Peace". It was a rainbow with flowers underneath it. We are so proud.

Gracie's mom Suzanne has just opened a fun business creating custom promotional novelties. Her website at http://www.starnovelties.com includes a section on special causes. Because non-profit and hospital groups supported her family, she is working to support them in return with special help and pricing.

Hello, Dear Super Pals!

There is so much going on in the world right now that I find I want to eat more chocolate. It doesn't solve anything, but it is comforting and then I seem to think more clearly, perhaps because the caffeine says, "Yes, you can."

I have a show at a new venue (well, new to me!) in Houston this Saturday. I am hoping those of you in the big H can come out and celebrate with me and my Soul Purpose band. Chocolate for all!

Hello, Everybody!

IT'S SPRING! Doncha just love all the color everywhere? (Except for the people still in snow. Well, snow is lovely, too! Especially when you turn it into snow angels!)

Whew! What a whirlwind it has been since I last wrote. If you'd like to catch up on what's been going on in the Super Pal Universe, feel free to check out my blog (http://www.zenlala.com) for further details. I'm also in the process of writing Ellen DeGeneres as often as possible through the blog. You know, you can't have a dream come true if you don't put it out there! Come join me in the hilarity and subtleties of life!

NEWS:

MOTHERLODE has had it's release date pushed back to June 9...why? Well, because I am going into a joint venture with Mesa Blue/Fontana/Universal for major distribution... so, you should be able to find the new record in Virgin Megastores, Best Buy, Borders, etc. This is exciting for me because I will now be partnering with a larger company, but still retaining ownership of the masters and Sleeveless (my label) will have more power to boot. Thank you to George Nauful for being a creative business man, and to Rob Sides (General Manager of Sleeveless) for introducing us and getting the ball rolling! Watch for the NEW website coming March 31...Gene has really done a beautiful job! And you'll get hints of what is to come with the artwork for the new cd....

NAPPA has released a collection of cds with winners for best children's music, and my song for Lily, "It's Alright", is included on the cd entitled "Classic Lullabies". The set also includes songs by Stormy Weather, Tom Chapin, Kenny Loggins, Gene Miller, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer...

Check out Gallery Store 37! This is a great art gallery we discovered on our trip to Chicago. This isn't just a store for art's sake, but assists young people into becoming contributing artists with a unique job training program in the arts. All proceeds go back into funding the program that makes the storefront, and training, possible. Check them out at http://www.gallery37.org

Thanks to the good folks at Jefferson Freedom Cafe... on a whim, I talked about the Tanner Romania Mission and turned my set list into a giant "we love you" card, complete with donations. $200 will be sent to Romania! Thank you!

the tanner romania mission is currently putting an addition onto the boys home they have built for orphans. if you would like to make additional donations, please send them to: gloria allread, 1rst C.C.C.C., 115 west 5th street, greenville, OH, 45331... thank you for helping to save a life!!!

Jan Laramie, one of our necessary angels, passed away after a long battle with Huntington's Disease. Jan and Phil have been faithful and kind supporters of my music... if anyone would like to make a donation on behalf of this beautiful woman, memorials can be sent to:
The Huntington Disease Society of America
8039 Watson Road
St. Louis, MO 63119

And my dear friend, Barry Wilbern, passed after an accident while working on a beloved building. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I knew Barry since 1981...

Love,
Sara

APRIL 9....Austin, TX....Music in the Park for the Arts... Barton Hills Elementary Fundraiser for Music and Art funding in the school... 1-8 pm, Sara plays for families at 4:45-6pm.... School funding for arts has been slashed 25%, so please come enjoy Trish Murphy, Darden Smith, Carrie Rodriguez, Natural Causes and Sara while supporting arts for kids!

April 15...Austin, TX...Girl Scout Lone Star Council Event... Sara and other local leaders talk with girls about careers

April 17th...5th annual Universal Living Wage Tax Day Event! Go to your local Post Office and call for a Universal Living Wage, which would be a single national formula that ensures anyone working 40 hours in a week would be able to afford basic food, shelter and have access to health care.

Many American business have grown to rely on government subsidies to pick up a portion of the basic wage... Workers are forced in ever increasing numbers to rely on food stamps and general assistance. Congress originally intended for these to be emergency, stop gap measures. If businesses paid employees a fair living wage, we could dramatically reduce the burden on tax payers! Select a post office in your city where the media show up every year to report last minute tax filers... Then call or email us with that address at rrtroxell@aol.com with "tax day" in the subject. We will send you a 4' by 10' banner that says: REDUCE YOUR TAXES!

Visit www.UniversalLivingWage.org to see photos of past Tax Days and "Bridge the Economic Gap Day" held in September 2005. I attended the September event here in Austin....

"You shall not abuse a needy and destitute laborer, whether a fellow countryman or a stranger... You must pay him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets, for he is needy and sets his life on it..."
Deuteronomy 24:14-15

Until next time...

I wish you well,
I wish you love
I wish you all I can...
Gratefully,
Sara

a teensy tiny mini-letter from sara for may 10, 2006

Dear Everybody,

This important Austin based non-profit organization, One World Theater, takes music programs into Austin's schools which is vitally important with the 25% slash in arts funding here in Texas. These folks are great, and I want to help...

This is a request from me to you -and it is an easy one for you! We are having a Golf Marathon on Monday, May 15th at the Lakeway Yaupon Golf Course. This is very different than your typical golf tournament. This is like a walk or race that other organizations do by pledging so many dollars per mile, but this is about pledging $$ per hole played. I plan on playing at least 100 holes of golf and kindly ask each of you to pledge whatever you can... or feel free to pledge me at $1.00 per hole. (That's only $100 if I play all 100 holes and live through it to get back to you to collect! You might remember two years ago I did a charity golf tournament for the homeless and played 64 of the 100 holes... an 11 hour day, but I did it and loved every minute of it.)

I truly, truly appreciate your support...Please email back directly (sara@sarahickman.com) to me and let me know if you'd like to help. If you want to pledge more (or less), every contribution is welcome!

DAN FOGELBERG

I hope you will remember, like me, to keep dan fogelberg in our prayers... he was good to let me open for him... and he was one of my early childhood mentors, especially on the guitar/songwriting ideas. http://danfogelberg.com/news.html

MOTHERLODE NEWS

You can now pre-order Motherlode! Just go to my site at http://www.sarahickman.com/music/motherlode and click the link to pre-order. If your CD contains a special golden ticket, you win free admission to a show and a chance to pal around backstage!

STREET ANGELS

Wow, since the last newsletter a bunch of angels have stepped forward to help promote Motherlode! Thanks so much, and we'll be sending out packets to you in the next week with some goodies to hand out. If you'd like to be a Sara Hickman Street Angel, just go to http://www.sarahickman.com/community/angels/ to learn more!

Gratefully,

Sara

Reviews are starting to come in for "Motherlode," including this one from Amazon.com...

Musically, thematically, even spiritually, this two-disc meditation on motherhood and the joys and frustrations of women is the most wildly ambitious release of the veteran Texan's career. After channeling her talents into a series of children's albums in recent years, Sara Hickman returns to thoroughly adult concerns (as the cover illustration from the Kama Sutra attests). Though her style has long straddled folk and pop, the richness of these arrangements underscores the depth of her lyrics. On "To a Maddening Ghost," the melodic sophistication and inventive section support a desperate prayer, a lullaby for the sleepless, while the stirring lead guitar from David Grissom (Joe Ely, Dixie Chicks) brings "Living in Quiet Desperation" to a strong, almost triumphant finale. In addition to the eclecticism of her own material, Hickman offers a surprising range of covers, including a somber reading of Tears for Fears' "Mad World," a jazzy recasting of the Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper," an inspirational reading of Peter Himmelman's "This Too Shall Pass," and a rendition of the traditional "Wagoner's Lad" that evokes Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. The discs split in terms of mood, with despair dominant on the first and happiness permeating the second, as the seven-minute "My Mama's Hands" (with harmonies from Kelly Willis) provides a bridge of generational continuity.

Sending summer time love and hope to see you soon!

The North Texas screening of Joss Whedon's 'Serenity' will be held at midnight on Friday, 23 June, at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison. (That's Friday night / Saturday morning, for those keeping score.) Tickets are $10 in advance*, and $12 at the door. (We highly recommend buying tickets in advance from http://Serenity.TheAmigos.net, as we have every indication this event will sell out.)

The screening is part of the Serenity Now / Equality Now global event, which benefits Equality Now, a non-profit organization that works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure.

Ticket holders are eligible to win door prizes from the event's promotional partners -- Movie Trading Company, Sci-Fi Expo, BenBella Books, FanDone.com, and DragonWeave Jewelry. For details and advance tickets, go to http://Serenity.TheAmigos.net

Here's a new review from ThisIsTexasMusic.com...
To paraphrase a defunct automaker’s catch phrase, “This is not your toddler’s Sara Hickman!”

Hickman’s new double album, Motherlode, catches the prolific singer and writer of both adult and children’s songs in two distinctly grown-up moods: one quite desperate, the other more defiant.

Clearly, womanhood and motherhood, and the mud too often slung at both, weigh heavily and proximately on Hickman, who traditionally has smiled brightly from her album covers.

True, many of her previous outings were also bittersweet, often blending hope and despair, love and loss. This time out, however, despair and loss push more forcefully to the fore; but while hope and love are less readily apparent than usual, they remain forces nonetheless.

On disc one, The Mirror (Of Despair), Hickman juxtaposes biting lyrics against sweet music and well crafted musicianship to highlight the fate of women trapped in a misogynistic social prison. She critiques the status quo most effectively with an upbeat reading of the traditional The Wagoner’s Lad; an honest, achingly personal take on Tears for Fear’s Mad World; and her own self-affirming Comfort’s Sigh and My Mama’s Hands.

With disc two, The Thread (Of Happiness), Hickman leverages a set of (literally) more brassy songs to defy that patriarchal prison. Here, she broadens her musical palette with the funky, horn driven reggae of her own Two Days Today; the country-flavored blues of Amy Rigby’s Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?; the post-hip-hop R&B of Addison and Singh’s Enuf; the classic folk-rock of Peter Himmelman’s This Too Will Pass; and the soulful jazz of Dan Cohen’s paean to parenthood, Your Reward.

Despite occasional heavy-handed production/engineering/mixing values – for which Hickman as Producer must be held responsible – both discs share her deliciously versatile vocals, creative arrangements, and the support of a cadre of guest artists both local (including singer/songwriters Shawn Colvin and Kelly Willis) and national (including guitar guru Adrian Belew).

Motherlode documents Hickman’s reaction to a social minefield that should have been swept clean years ago. With well crafted and chosen words and music she describes, critiques, and in her way overcomes an unjust world in which women remain second-class citizens. And all along, she manages to eschew self-destruction negativism in favor of a healthy dose of “can do” positivism.

Whether or not Hickman purposefully includes her piquant and hit-worthy cover of The Rolling Stones’ Mother’s Little Helper to remind us that baby-boomer second wave feminism is now four-plus decades old is questionable. Whatever the case, it is a timely reminder that equality for women and mothers in both the private and public spheres should no longer be an issue, but a fact.

4-1/2 of 5 stars

Got Motherlode?
Sara Hickman's eNewsletter - July 13, 2006

Dear Mother's Helpers,

MOTHERLODE is out and in full swing! We have been getting radio play at non-commercial stations around the U.S! Thanks to each and everyone of you who have been supportive and bought a copy of the new cd... Make sure and check the radio listing in this newsletter... if you can, please call in and support the new songs! We will be working commercial radio very soon, and will send those station ID's out as soon as we start. Believe it or not, your phone calls make a HUGE difference on what program directors decide to play...so don't be shy!

A mama black bear and her cubs, leaping salmon, free-flying wild bald eagles, a sea otter and two banana slugs... A full moon and crisp night air, surrounded by huge trees and the call of the wild... These are some of the memories my family and I will carry from our great trip to Ketchikan, Alaska where I had a wonderful set of shows. I performed at the local library for children, and one at a theater for families.

I'd also like to thank Linda and John Severt for opening their home and hosting a house concert in Seattle! You can read more about all of this on my blog, http://www.zenlala.com...

Which, by the way, will be part of a worldwide blogathon on July 29th! Check out http://www.blogathon.org for more information, and visit my friend's site, DEVIN PIKE, http://swamplog.typepad.com.

The charity I've chosen is The Invisible Children Project, which is helping the children of Uganda escape the Lord's Resistance Army, a group of wandering thugs who kidnap and torture young children.
