A Summery Sara eNewsletter for August 3, 2005 hello, everybody! we have been having a summer of excitement here in old austin, texas--highs and lows and travel and water and family and pets and rock-n-roll---and sometimes pet rocks and low water. i do hope your summer has been all you could have dreamed! next week, i start mixing my new album, "motherlode". it will be arriving in the springtime, and i am bursting at the seams with happiness about it all. you know, i never finished telling you the #1 musical moment in my TOP TWENTY count down. (if you haven't read the first nineteen, greg d has done a marvelous job keeping track of all of them. just click on the link at the bottom of the letter.) here, then, is the NUMBER 1 MOMENT IN THE TOP TWENTY COUNTDOWN (followed by some upcoming dates) 1996...kerrville folk festival...it is hot, hot, hot and the sky is dark, dark, dark. there, out in the darkness, sitting on wooden benches and chairs and blankets and dancing barefoot in the dirt, i can hear the rustling of an audience, enjoying the music, enjoying the night. it is time. rod is calling to us. "time to come up," he is saying. time to cross the line of hu du man, the invisible line that the japanese believe exists between back stage and out front. crossing that line, you become someone more than yourself. you become the muse. before i even cross that line, i have changed. it has been a long year of joy and confusion and sorrow. i am no longer just a musician, but a woman who has recently had her first child. a woman who has been singing to the new life inside her, feeling the pulse of jubilation, the thrust of expansion, elbows and knees and occassional hiccups...growing from a hippie chick to a person who has come to understand the circle of life takes precedence over every nuance. being a mother changed me for the better. i am walking on to a stage, ready to sing, ready to enjoy this night. my baby is asleep in the arms of my dear friend, diana, in the little house backstage. i feel strong, i feel elated. the music is shared, and i am bouncing. the applause is resounding. i am elated, yet, in the midst of rod's calling for me to return for an encore, i hear a high-pitched sound that makes every fiber in my being ache, it causes me to snap to attention and look, feverishly, through the groups milling around for the person attached to it...where is my baby? why is she crying? the applause has woken her up, she is frightened. diana has come to the sidelines, she is holding lily, looking to me, and i cross to her faster than lightening. rod is getting impatient, understandably, asking me to come out and do one more song. i can not leave my child. rod is staring at me...."COME ON," his eyes are shouting. i make a decision. i walk to the microphone. my heart is beating a thousand miles, my child is calm, content, on my shoulder. her eyes are open, but her trust is immediate. we are connected. i am standing, alone, with my baby. i am looking out into the waiting night. everyone calms down. i ask a question. i ask the audience to help me. i say to them, "thank you" and how wonderful this honor has been, to be on this stage. i ask them to help me as my baby has woken up, the sound of hands clapping too much for tiny ears. i explain that i will sing one more song, would they be willing not to clap at the end? it is hard, to hold one's applause: it is what we, as a society, know and understand to do...to share with an artist our delight in their having shared with us their gifts...and, speaking as a musician, it is a feeling of great accomplishment to know the audience is happy, that they are with you in this vulnerable condition. i don't know how many people were there that night. i have been told 6,000 people were in the fields, waiting. i can not tell you. but i can tell you this. singing "it's alright", singing with all my heart, with a new heart on my chest, beating silently into sleep, and looking out into that good night was a memory i shall cherish forever. it was the audience's gift to me...as the last note slipped from my lips, i held on as long as i could, and then, gently, without disturbing my daughter, placed a solitary finger to my lips...and not a hand stirred. not one person clapped, or called out...we were united, the friends of music and me...and it was the lullaby of all peoples, to feel the love from all around, to hear the crickets chirping. to know that this song was carried out on the wind into only god knows where, but the moment was ours and ours alone.
what an astounding blessing.

Why is a Universal Living Wage important? Because poverty doesn't have to exist. When people make a living wage, they can have fair and decent housing, they can take care of their children, they can have transportation to get to their job. There is no "us" and "them." It is only one nation, torn apart by those that have and those that have not. The outcome of poverty is being felt in the aftermath of Katrina. Every single one of the families who could not leave Louisiana and Mississippi due to poverty could have been self-sufficient had they had living wages. We must, as a community, start treating our sisters and brothers with the dignity that all human beings deserve. This is an awful time. WE MUST NOT GIVE UP. We must move forward and be a mass of united protest for change. If you can not attend on Tuesday, do not let another minute go by without making change begin now. Make phone calls. Be outraged and tell people in DC how you feel. I know if you are on my email list, you are one of the people who is already making change. I am grateful to you. We must continue to promote the good we want to have happen, Join me.
In God's Grace and Love,

A special Sara Hickman note for September 7, 2005
Hi, All! Tonight I'm playing the benefit concert at Rutumaya Coffee Space on South Congress.... it has been brought to my attention: please DO NOT bring donated items after all... but I do hope you'll still bring yourselves! Come hear me sing....I'll sing just to you! Best of all, the proceeds will STILL go to the Red Cross, so you'll CONTINUE to be supporting the families of New Orleans who are here and need our help. The following announcement was released yesterday: "The Austin American Statesman reports this morning (Tuesday) that donation acceptance has been suspended, as city officials try to sort through what has been donated already. They've also run out of room for donated goods. The evacuee families are in a period of transition as state and local authorities start relocating some people in Texas to other states." (From www.austinhelpingneworleans.org) Thank you so much for all you are doing to help! And thanks to Zirkel and Lindy for keeping me updated. See you all tonight at 8:30pm, With a song in my heart, Sara -----------------How you can help----------------- These organizations need cash to assist hurricane victims: American Red Cross, 800-HELP-NOW (435-7669) English, 800-257-7575 Spanish. Sara's all naked! Really!
Hey Y'all, Spike here with some exciting news. This past May, when I was on a documentary shoot in LaVeta, Colorado, a couple of things happened. First, I got an email asking for a donation for a silent auction to help out Gretchen and Jon Dee Graham's son, Willie. Willie developed Legg Perthes, a rare childhood form of avascular necrosis of the hip. The Graham family lost insurance coverage when their provider filed Chapter 11. Now Willie's condition is considered pre-existing by other companies, making him uninsurable. The other thing that happened is, I wandered into this little bakery and happened upon a calendar of local musicians, naked but for their instruments. This was a takeoff of that calendar in England-- all the old ladies taking it off to raise money. So I thought Austin could use a calendar like that and that we could give the proceeds to Willie. Having no clue whatsoever how to undertake this project, I did what I always do-- I closed my eyes and jumped in. Upon returning to Austin, I ran into Joe Ely at a party and asked him if he'd strip for me. He said yes. Then Sara Hickman agreed. An ex-boyfriend told me our friend, photographer Will Van Overbeek would never shoot the calendar for free. I love a challenge like that. So I called Will and he said he'd shoot the whole thing. Not necessary. In no time I had top musical acts and photographers lining up to take part in the project. And Pentagram designers Erin Mayes and DJ Stout stepped up to do the design work. Skylist.com kicked in some dough for printing. The Chronicle and KGSR helped out. The list of people who helped just goes on and on and on. The result is NAKED, a calendar of 34 Austin musicians in the buff including: Guy Forsyth, Kathy McCarty, The Small Stars, Sara Hickman, Eliza Gilkyson & Shawn Colvin, The Austin Lounge Lizards, Matt the Electrician & Michael Fracasso & Nathan Hamilton, Southpaw Jones, The Flatlanders, The New Hot Damn (Renee Woodward, Trish Murphy, & Kacy Crowley), Tosca, Glover Gill, Patricia Vonne, and Jon Dee Graham. Front Gate Tickets offered to be our online sales folks. Pre-sales have started. If you go to www.frontgatetickets.com you can see the cover picture, shot by Michael O'Brien, of the New Hot Damn. Of course we hope to have many printings, but there are no guarantees-- if it sells out, that might be it. So we're encouraging folks to order in advance. In store sales start the week of ACL fest. We'll have them at the Waterloo Merch Tent. And soon we'll have a list of locations around town where you can buy them-- BookPeople and Waterloo are already on board. 100% of the proceeds go to the medical bills of Willie Graham which will be ongoing and expensive. Because so many people got so involved, Gretchen Graham and I have formed the Austin Children of Musicians, Artists, and Writers' Fund to help other artists' kids in crisis. Future calendars and other fundraisers will benefit ACMAWF (and we are paired with the non-profit Women & Their Work so all donations are tax deductible.) Our goal is to provide immediate financial relief-- sans piles of paperwork-- to families with urgent need. I'm sending this note out on the 14th anniversary of my move to Austin. I got here in 1991 with a ten month old baby, no job, very little money, no housing lined up, and only one friend in the entire city, which is to say, I closed my eyes and jumped in. I had no idea back then that one place could be filled with so much love. As with the calendar though, a million people just showed up to help me. This city blows my mind. Thanks to all who helped with the calendar, and thanks in advance to all of you who buy the calendar. Please help spread the word-- pass this along to all of your friends.
Thanks,

The first 5 people to purchase 50 or more “Collaborations” CDs will get Will in a tux playing a solo violin set at the event of their choice. All proceeds from the CD sales benefit CASA of Travis County, an organization that advocates for abused and neglected children making their way through the court system. The CD features live performances from Shawn Colvin, Eliza Gilkyson, Patrice Pike, Ian Moore, Guy Forsyth, Ruthie Foster, Libby Kirkpatrick, Barbara K, Jimmy La Fave, Slaid Cleaves, and Sara Hickman. These CDs make great gifts for employees, co-workers, and clients, but you only have until Friday, Oct 28th at midnight to make your purchase to qualify for the contest!

Hello, everyone!
Fall is bringing change. I love the swirl of color and crisp air.
FOR DALLAS/FT. WORTH FOLKS November 20, 5 pm (early show! yes!) I will be performing at the Granada Theatre in Dallas, TX with my band. There are many important things about this show: 1) It is the first time I will have played the Granada Theatre since 1995, when we had the "Necessary Angels" release party. So, I see a lot of symbolism in starting to rev up for next spring's release of "Motherlode" by returning to the Granada. Come spread your wings and fly! 2) We will be performing new songs from the upcoming album... 3) They serve food! And you have seats. Seats are gooooood. Dinner and drinks and music and seats!

BAND NAME I need a name for the band. What should we call it? Would you like to help me name the band? For the person with the best band name, I'll make you a Super Sara Kit full of all kinds of one of a kind goodies, and mail it to you, wrapped up with love. WOMEN IN MUSIC GUITARS
Recently, I helped paint a guitar, which will be auctioned to raise money for the Komen Foundation (breast cancer research.) They are set to go up on an online auction and will be promoted on Clear Channel Radio stations, KVET and Channel 102.3 ending in conjunction with Austin's Race for the Cure on November 6th. Bid high, bid often! Let's hope the guitars raise some money and awareness! Click here to join in the auction. Once again, thank you for all your support. Rock on, Sara |
