Hi, kitty cats!

Here I am with my first bit of fun for you in the new millenium! Hang on to your seats! Do not try to lift the safety bar! Keep your hands and feet inside the ride!

First, an update on NEWBORN...it seems that we have almost reached the $20,000 mark in donations for the HILL COUNTRY YOUTH RANCH and MAUTNER PROJECT. Waterloo Records in Austin is now carrying it in their stores, and had it on their listening station for a month. I was told it made one of the top selling lists, but I didn't get a copy so I can't brag on that too much. For those of you that may not know, NEWBORN is the first in a series of CDS I am independently producing for children. This one I decided to donate 100% of the proceeds to charity. Basically in honor of all the Necessary Angels who helped me a while back! If you are interested in the CD, you can check out one of the songs on MP3 format at Audiogalaxy.com, and you can order them at theconnextion.com, or through me at: 504 west 24th, PMB 431, Austin, Tx 78705.

My new CD, SPIRITUAL APPLIANCES, arrives in stores on February 22!!! There will be many tour dates which I will find out later today and then send another email out. But let me say the kick off party is in Dallas at the fabulous Lakewood Theatre on February 12 (a Saturday night). This theatre is GORGEOUS, and I am hand making a little film to run behind us while we perform. I will have the string section and full band...even piano! The best part is that this theatre will have table seating (limited) with candles on the tables...ooh, romantique! This show is always a great, loving, wacky true to life Sara Experience, so I would highly suggest coming and joining us in our lovefest!!!

Next Thursday, January 13, I will be in Dallas to do:

CBS Channel 11 KTVT-TV for a five minute appearance on "Positively Texas" which airs at 3 p.m.

broadcast.com....visit me live on the internet in a special concert with me and kristin de witt (my talented friend and back up singer)...you can hear us and see us, live! 7:00 pm

Friday, Jan. 14, Channel 4 KDFW-TV for a performance at 8:20 or 8:40 a.m. on "Good Day Dallas."

If you are on AOL, please come and chat with us under Sara Hickman...

go to channels

go to entertainment

go to speak out! (chats, etc)

go to artists A-Z

look up Sara Hickman and read our posts. We are planning a live chat room party...we will let you know the date and time, or come visit and find out for yourself. Last time we had an online toga party...lemme just say, you missed quite a lot.

also, here are my tour dates so far:

1/14 first presbyterian church, ft. worth, tx

1/23-30 kerrville folk cruise to belize w/me, trout fishing, susan werner and ray wylie hubbard

2/12 lakewood theatre valentine's show/record release party, dallas, tx

3/3 cactus cafe, austin, tx

3/4 mucky duck, houst, tx

3/8 the bluebird, nashville, tn

3/18 schubas, chicago, illinois

3/19 generations nightclub, st. louis, mo

4/20 club passim, cambridge, MA

5/2 private event, denver, co

Wishing you all a fantastic 2000! See you soon!

Oh, by the way, if you come to my shows and notice I look lumpy, it's because I am. I am pregnant and expecting my second child on June 22! Wa-hoo! Come see Miss Buddha perform!

Love,

Sara Hickman

(First, Sara wrote...)

hi, kitty cats!

on april 4th, KID RHINO will be releasing a CD for kids called CHICKEN SOUP FOR LITTLE SOULS that my song, "You're A Slice of Heaven" will be included on. i'm very excited because one of the other songs to be included is "Que Sera, Sera" by Doris Day!!! is that so cool or what?

just wanted to share.

hope your day is going well, and don't forget to floss!

love,

sara hickman

(Then a little later, Sara wrote...)

hello, kitty cats...

please don't think i'm crass. (if you already do, i will accept my fate!) following is the address to vote online for the 2000 Austin Music Poll. although i am not listed anywhere in the poll, if you are in a voting mood, you could always write my name in somewhere and i will buy you an ice cream next time we meet.

i feel like i am on a streak here because i just won first place at my church for decorating my sunday school class's door...i did a manger scene with pictures of everyone in my class as a character. my friend shannon was a camel, and my husband got to be a shepherd boy.

i think this is a good sign for continued success, don't you?

anyhoo, here is the address:

http://www.auschron.com/musicpoll/

and there are a lot of great people to vote for...like PAUL PEARCY, who plays drums all over my new record...

miss you already,

sincerely,

Latest Scoop from Sara, 20 Jan 2000

hello, kitty cats!

just a short note to say those are some dandy pants you are wearing today!

how have you been? how was your new year's eve? i was at the beach with friends, watching fireworks over the ocean. i hope yours was quiet, simple and joyous, as well.

these are some things i've been up to that i wanted to share!

i just finished designing TISH HINOJOSA's album cover with my design partner, Neil. (we have started a company to design cd booklets, posters, etc.) look for her new album in stores this spring...it is called SIGN OF TRUTH on ROUNDER RECORDS.

very happy to say that NEWBORN made Margaret Moser's Top Ten List of Albums of 1999 in the Austin Chronicle! Hurray for babies/parents everywhere!

i think i told you all i will be on a KidRhino compilation CD called CHICKEN SOUP FOR LITTLE KIDS (or something like that)...my song, SLICE OF HEAVEN, will be included... i'm excited because Doris Day is one of the other artists!!! anyway, it will be out APRIL 4th!!!

february 2...a live online chat with me and all you kitty-cats...stay tuned for more info on how to get to the chat...hosted by me, it will be a CRUSE THEME party...last time we did a toga party...

also, for those of you wondering where i was for the broadcast. com live performance, they are going to run it on FEBRUARY 3rd, followed by a LIVE online chat with yours truly. gee, this is beginning to be a habit! maybe i should become a nun! ha ha, get it? habit? nun? ok...

i am honored to have been asked to be on the Board of Directors for the Austin Mothers Milk Bank. i have accepted and already attended my first meeting of the new year. this is one of only 4 banks in the USA...it stores donor breast milk, which is then utilized to help premature/sick babies, or infants whose mothers' have had mastectomies. it is a WONDERFUL organization...i am very proud to be involved. there will be a mother's day concert here in austin with me and shawn colvin (and others to be announced) on MAY 14...i will be 8 months pregnant, so come enjoy the show and support a good cause! plus, you can get your face painted at one of the booths, if you'd like!

also, i am very much involved with the MILLION MOMS MARCH...it will also be held May 14th, except in Washington, DC...we are hoping to have a million moms marching for stricter gun regulations. (i was asked to perform at this, as well, but it is looking like i won't be able to fly, and so i have decided to accept the mother's milk bank benefit concert) PLEASE JOIN IN THIS GREAT CAUSE! anyone can march...dads, uncles, friends, parents, teachers...won't it be amazing to see that many moms in one place, though? (can you imagine the scenes in local restaurants...everyone washing their hands at once because mom said so!! ha ha.)

Info for the Million Mom March: 1-888-989-MOMS

Thanks for reading all this...feel free to let me know what YOU've been up to, as well!

Peacefully, Respectfully,

Sara Hickman

kitty cats! i'm back!

i'm about to leave on the cruise, so sorry i am inundating you with last minute news. i'm an efficient girl, though, you must say!

this saturday, january 22: an interview i did with channel 8 (cable) here in austin will run every hour for twenty four hours on their station! my question is: can someone tape it for me? it's a NEWBORN interview and i want a copy for my daughter...thank you to whomever takes on this task!

february 5...on the air live with Teresa at Femme FM here in Austin on KUT, 10 pm 90.5

so yesterday i went to have breakfast tacos at the best little restaurant in the WORLD (that is not a bunch of hulla-balloo!). it is called TACO EXPRESS, but everyone knows it as MARIA's...anyway, i'm standing in line to pay for my tacos when i run into ROSE, who produced some FANNIE MAE commercials i sang on. she had some interesting news that i would like to share with you! before i share it, let me explain...

these commercials are meant to target low-income families who don't think they can afford to buy a home of their own. the songs i sing are poignant, and the visuals are very sweet and lasting. in one i am singing "when will my ship come in?" and you see a young hispanic woman day-dreaming on a bus...in the other, i am singing like rosemary clooney while a little girl looks out a window, excited about the fact another little girl is moving in next door!

so, rose and i are talking and she says, "the first week your commercial ran, fannie mae received over 20,000 phone calls!!" she said the company was really excited by the response. then she said of those 20,000 phone calls, 65% of those folks will receive the home loan they are requesting by the end of the year! i thought that was pretty cool.

well, i wanted to share that with you over your breakfast tacos, so it's kinda like we were all together!

It would be wonderful if 2000 were the year a cure for breast cancer was found!!!! This is one note I'll gladly pass on. The notion that we could raise $16 million by buying a book of stamps is powerful! As you may be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that kills and maims so many of our mothers, sisters, friends. Instead of the normal $.33 for a stamp, this one costs $.40. The additional $.07 will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $6.60. This one is only $8.00. It takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $16,000,000 for this vital research. Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if the stamp out sold the lottery this week. What a statement it would make that we care.

I urge each of you to do two things TODAY:

1. Go out and purchase some of these stamps.

2. E-mail your friends to do the same.

Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive. Please help! Thank YOU

have a great day! and i promise...no more updates until i return from the kerrville cruise!

ta-ta-for-now!

Sunday, Feb 27...live in-store at 3:00 pm at BORDERS, Austin, Tx. And just so everyone knows, BORDERS has been WONDERFUL about donating money (from their pocket!!) from the sales of my music to the Hill Country Youth Ranch. See, you can be big and corporate and still have a heart!!

GOOD NEWS! the benefit i played in january for the first presbyterian homeless shelter in fort worth, tx raised $12,000!!!

And yesterday I went out to Ingram, Tx to visit the Hill Country Youth Ranch. This place is full of such many wonderful programs to help abused/neglected children...they have a wonderful theatre space, a recording studio, dance/arts program, therapist on sight, a dining area that looks out over the woods of the hill country, teachers and adults who obviously care deeply for the well-being of these kids. They also have a horse-back riding program, llamas, a baby longhorn they rescued, and a sweet Aussie sheep dog named Maggie. The Sara Hickman Children's Fund now has over $30,000 !!! Thanks to everyone who has bought a NEWBORN cd, or sent money directly in support of the ranch. I played on a set of drums that the fund purchased, and watched a moving dance with six of the young women who live at the ranch...they have purchased dance slippers/costumes for the dancers with those monies...It is all such a great blessing...

This Tuesday, February 22, is the official release date of SPIRITUAL APPLIANCES... I hope you can find it in a store near you...if not, well, POO! Take yourself out for a well-deserved ice cream!

Lotsa Joy,

Sara

Dreadfully Overdue Sara News, 15 Jun 2000

Dear Kitty-Cats of the World!

Hello from the blessed soil of Austin, Texas, where I am currently enjoying mommydom with my firstborn and my darling husband! And putting my swollen feet up on a pillow in my hammock while the wind gently rocks me back and forth... Being a pregnant, touring woman is a fun challenge, especially on the ankles!!!

Thank you to all the kitties who came to the most recent shows in Philly, Anapolis (I think I spelled that wrong--poo!), Bethesda; Arlington, VA; New York and Boston!

Some of the highlights:

In Arlington at the IOTA: First of all, let me just say that the food at this place is completely 16 stars!!! After a couple of meals on the road (i.e., ARBY's, etc), performers are grateful for clubs with superb restaurants attached at the hip!

(NOTE: I hate to interrupt myself here, but I sense that I am going to continue to lose my grip on the correct spelling of words, so please know that I am aware of it, but, allegedly, it is one of the charming aspects of the later portion of pregnancy! Thank you for your patience. And now, back to our regularly scheduled newsletter...)

Carey Colvin opened the show for us...she and her husband were wonderful. Her voice is rich and pretty, and it was a treat to hear her AND eat the yummy food! Magda Lynn Seymour came out with 2,714 of her best friends, and their enthusiasm was infectious! Also, every man in that club was winking at Kristin (and, occassionally, at me! I had to keep asking Kristin if I was seeing things)... So Kristin and I dubbed The Iota the land of enchanted men with naughty (yet seemingly harmless and happy) intentions. We felt like the high school hotties, if just for the night!

The sound man (sorry, I forgot his name---another poo!) was EXCELLENT! When I said, "MAKE US ROCK, MAN!" he pulled out all the stops.

For our encore we sang THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (being so close to the capitol and all).

We give the crowd and the Iota a STANDING OVATION! And thanks to Suzanne for coming out and volunteering to sell CDS...you were AWESOME!

Next night we performed in PHILADEPHIA at the always wonderful TIN ANGEL! Irene Kelly, who drove 600 miles from Nashville!!!, opened for us. Wow! She was terrific! I hate to do this, but her voice was a more mature version of Kelly Willis, and all her original songs were really catchy...we traded CDs.

I hate to be redundant, but let me just point out that the food downstairs at Serrano's was ALSO beyond the great yum! I had these HUGE raviolis stuffed with all kinds of stuff that made me feel satisfied but not stuffed.

My cousin, Celeste, and her partner, Charlie, came...my mom's friend of 30 years, Martha Huggins, came...so you know there was lots of hugging going on...Plus, the highlight was a 10 year old boy whose parents were bringing him to his FIRST CONCERT EVER!!! I felt so honored! It made me remember my first concert...David Cassidy...!!! Front row, dead center, my best friend on one side and my ma on the other...I think I was 8...? Anyway, the little boy, who was very self-assured and quite funny, sat next to my left and we got into a discussion about Marilyn Manson that was realllllllly good. The audience loved it when we starting dissecting Mr. Manson...that was a lot of fun!

Thanks to Theresa for coming out and volunteering to sell CDS!!! You totally rock! We give the audience and the Tin Angel a STANDING OVATION!!!

We also had the opportunity to go over to WXPN and perform on "World Cafe" with David Dyer (who we LOVE!!!)...we will let you know when that will be airing...it is national, so hopefully everyone will have a chance to grab a cuppa tea and relax with Kristin and me!

Then, the next morning, after a harrowing night at a Red Roof Inn of gangsters congregating outside our hotel window with a dog who shat all over our sidewalk, we drove on to:

Anapolis, MD to the RAM'S HEAD to open for Jeffrey Gaines!!!

Ok...let me just say this. Wow. The Ram's Head is like being inside Architectural Digest...such a beautiful interior...beautiful orange and crimson wall murals...linen covered tables, lighting, carpeting, bathrooms with a hint of sophistication...and YUMMY FOOD! (Am I sounding pregnant, too?) BIG PLUS! A real, live DRESSING ROOM with a small TV to watch bad made for TV movies with Jeffrey and his girlfriend...in this case, we watched Tatum O'Neil go to jail for a murder she didn't commit...and she had an interesting hair color change...we were all glued to the set!!! Until Jeffrey messed up the stations and we lost the channel for about fifteen minutes!! The most IMPORTANT fifteen minutes of the worst part of it all! Aaaargh! Whew. Then he fixed it, but it was time for him to go on, so he missed the end...

Kristin and I opened to a packed crowd, and it was fun because I think perhaps one person had ever heard of me (and she was elated when we sang, "I Wear the Crown"!!! God bless her! She hollered a nice "Yea!!!" when we rolled into it!) As we started out, half the room was listening, and half the room was having a drinky-poo, so after about the third song I thanked the side of the room who was paying attention and that made the drinkers become thinkers and then EVERYONE was listening! Whee! It was waaaaay fun!

We give the RAM'S HEAD another STANDING OVATION! We give the crowd a huge thank you hug for embracing a young upstart, and we give the food 16 Yums!!! Oh, my!

Then we rolled outta town the next day and went to BETHESDA, MD to do a private house concert! Now, let me just say this....we went from a nightclub that looked like some place Martha Stewart meets Georgia O'Keefe to a private home that looked like Pee Wee's Playhouse meets Contemporary Museum of Art and it was SUPER! We also stayed the night in their home...Kristin had the boys' room and I had the teenage girl's room which had the coolest collection of stuffed toys and a purple lamp made out of paper...I also finished ANGELA'S ASHES and watched WAITING FOR GUFFMAN after our show...yes!

I'd guess about fifty or sixty people came to the concert...all wonderful patent lawyers...and I ended up sitting on the floor with Kristin behind me on a chair...it was a whole lotta fun and even had some people singing along on "We Are Each Other's ANgels" in HARMONY...oh, lovliness!!!

We stayed up and chatted with everyone, and once again, the food was stellar...catered BBQ (I know, I know...what happened to my vegetarianism?!) and homemade gooey chocolate brownies...mmm....

We give this house concert a STANDING OVATION!! We give the home a giant OOH and AAH! We give the host and hostess and big hooray, and we give the flora and fauna of Bethesda a huge green thumbs up!!!

Monday morning...we're off to NEW YORK CITY!!! We had two days off to rest and shop and EAT MORE FOOD!!! Kristin went to play with her cousin and his fiance, I hung out with my daughter's fairy god-mother, Amiti, and we ate Thai Food, went to a Chinese market, saw "The Vagina Monologues" with Claire Daanes, Jennifer Lewis and Mary McDonnell...and let me say, I place that performance in my TOP TEN LIST OF ALL TIME...oh, wow! If ANY of you go to NYC soon, please please please go see this hilarious, moving, revealing piece...it is BRILLIANT!!! I now have the desire to become an actress just so I can perform in this show!!!

Wednesday rolls around and we performed at THE MERCURY LOUNGE! one of my fave places in NYC. Everyone from the label (Shanachie) came out...even the president (!!) which I didn't know until after the show...thank you to them!...and Jim K. (I can't remember how to spell his last name) opened with his entire band and let me just say, you will be hearing from this guy. Totally electrifying...a sort of Jeff Buckley meets the Beach Boys meets Elliot Smith...only completely positive songs, even some gospel type numbers thrown in among the pop. I will find out the correct spelling of his last name and let you know. So many people from Texas came! Friends from all over, Robert P. and Howard T. and Kenny and Leslie (sorry I couldn't really chat during soundcheck!) and Amiti and Brantley and even one of my oldest pals, GRETCHEN PHILLIPS!!!, she came out and surprised me...thank you, one and all.

We give the Mercury Lounge audience a STANDING OVATION, the club a BIG HOORAY (altho the dressing room is waaaaaay down in a basement next to a bunch of boxes of beer and the toilet was broken and we had no snacks (!!) but we did get bunches and bunches of FLOWERS! thanks to Marc and Kenny and I, assume, the marvelous Jim Dunlap!) and there was no food, so no review on that...

By now, we were missing home/family very much, even though everyone on our journey had been incredibly kind...but we only had one more night to go...and that was in:

BOSTON...at CLUB PASSIM...after we performed at WUMB ( I think I got the call letters correct)...we sang, even though my guitars had gone terribly outta tune (ugh..my worst nightmare)...but we had a great time on the show... loved our DJ, David...then we had to scoot back to the club and perform...

LOVED IT! Club Passim...oh, yes yes yes! Twinkly lights, you walk down into a little slice of heaven, AWESOME audience, no dressing room but you don't even care cuz everyone was in a great mood and Winker (the merriest man of the south) flew up to Boston JUST TO SELL my CDS and hang out and the club owners were SUPER (thank you, Martha, for the wind up bunny/ carrot!) and Matt the sound man...wowowow...I wish you ran sound for us every night!!! One of my ex-honeys, Brad H. , came out and it was so great to see him...so great to see Meg Schrull...she is about 11 (?) and I met her back when I was touring with Nanci Griffith...Meg's a sweetie pie and a smart human being, to boot! I don't recall the gentleman's name who gave me the yummy bag of cookies...but Winker had a great idea (after I ate one of the cookies!) to give away a free CD with the purchase of every cookie!!! So, we sold the cookies for $15 and gave away all the CDS!!!

Had a SPECTACULAR time...thank you to everyone: the club, the audience, Ellis Paul for putting us up in a his grrrrooovy bachelor pad, Winker, the cookie man, all the UT Alumni who came out...it was a swingin' way to end our tour! And special thanks to Kevin Wommack for putting it all together (flights, hotels, rental car) and Davis McLarty for booking it all. SPECIAL EXTRA THANKS to Kristin de Witt for making this tour such a joy because not only is she beautiful inside and out, but she is a great friend and a very good driver in a hard rain.

We love you all, and thank you from the tops to the bottoms of our hearts for all your enthusiasm, encouragement and singing along!

NOW...some more exciting news!

KGSR of Austin has added my music to their rotation...the song they have chosen is "Woman Waiting to Happen"!!! This is very exciting because other stations across the country respond to what KGSR does...

If you get a chance (and I apologize in advance for asking this of you, but, hey, if they play my songs on the radio more, I can come visit you more often! AND I do windows!) please call KGSR and thank JODY DENBERG (or anyone who picks up the phone at the station)...their number is 512-390-KGSR..

Hola, Amigos!

Well, things are heating up, not only in Texas, but all over our great country. This year's election certainly has been, as usual, an interesting one. I won't advise anyone on who they should vote for, but let me ask this of you---please VOTE! Vote because you can. (Personally, I still think Ann Richards should be president...)

Okey dokey artichokeys! Here's what's up in my little corner of the world...and remember, I always enjoy hearing about what is going on in yours. If you ever want to email me, feel free to do so at sara@sarahickman.com ...

First up, an update on our three month old...her monthly birthday is today! Hurray! She looooooves to talk. We chat all about what is going on down at her crib...tee hee.

Parenting Magazine recently reviewed NEWBORN...I haven't read what they said, but I gather it musta been kinda sweet cuz all the places that sell NEWBORN have been ordering bunches o' copies...You can always find it at the connextion.com, Amazon, or through Big Kids Video. com, as well. Of course, I always enjoy when you buy one from me at a show, cuz then I get to hear all about your kids, too!

Recent shows...Last week, I was honored to perform for the Texas Defender League, an organization that is trying to abolish the death penalty. Also in attendance were two of the most inspiring people: Molly Ivans, the brilliant, witty columnist, a long time supporter of the anti-death penalty movement, and Stephen Bright, director of the Southern Center for Human Rights. Mr. Bright gave a moving speech...his last words were "Thou shalt not kill", and everyone was in tears. I realize this issue is a scary, hard issue to talk about...but I am grateful there are people in the world who can speak about it eloquently and compassionately.

Then, Saturday night I was in Houston for a Border's Books opening...Sunday with Alejandro Escavedo at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center here in Austin...Wednesday night with Shawn Colvin for the Planned Parenthood Benefit at Stubbs (mmm...their bbq is awesome!), and last night I was having a wonderful time at our lovely Umlauf Sculpture Garden as the Honorary Chair. Please, if you ever visit Austin, make sure and visit this Garden. Sculptures are hidden amongst lush plants and ponds...and children love to run over the little bridges to discover a bronze hippo, or mother and child gazing to the stars. Lovely!

Two things coming up....one in Houston, and one here in Austin. I'm one of the musical artists that has been asked to design a piece of artwork for the SIMS foundation...it will be auctioned off this fall...the SIMS foundation raises money for musicians who need therapeutic/rehabilitative services...and also, my dad will be illustrating a piece to one of my songs, and that will be auctioned off this fall in Houston. I'll let you know more when I know more...

One of the groups I've been involved with for over 12 years is ARTS for PEOPLE. It provides music/art/dance therapy to people in hospitals in the Dallas area. This year, we are having our annual HARVEST FOR THE ARTS benefit concert with Brave Combo at Sons of Herman Hall in Dallas...on Thursday, October 19...I'll be sitting in with Brave Combo, so you know it will be polka dot heaven!*

In December, PERFORMING SONGWRITER will be running a piece they asked me to write. I'm calling it WALKING HAND IN HAND...How to be a Parent and a Musician...Emmylou Harris will be on the cover...This is a beautiful magazine...Lydia Hutchinson, the editor and founder, does a superb job, and the stories are insightful, funny and smart.

I'm getting geared up to do TODDLER, and I must say, I have a serious case of the giggles! I hope you will, too, when all is said and done.

Until next time, I am wishing each and everyone of you all the joys of life, family and, of course, music!

Sara

----added note (from a Tom Geddie email)---------

*Very briefly, A.R.T.S. for People provides about 300 hours of interactive programs a month at nearly 100 Dallas-area healthcare and community facilities, based on the belief that arts (music, dance/exercise, storytelling, visual arts, etc.) help heal and nourish. Also there will be a silent auction; proceeds also help provide needed income for local artists. If you want to know more, check out the website at http://www.artsforpeople.org.

Yikes! I can't keep SaraLoo from writing! She has the following to add to her previous newsletter!

-mailingList WiseGuy ;o)

------------------Newsletter (continued! eep!)----------------

...In other news, I'm collecting items for the Interfaith Hospitality Network. IHN helps homeless families by bringing them into churches and synagogues, where they live for a week at a time before moving on to the next church, until they find permanent housing. Recently, 3 families were placed! If anyone has any of the following items that are no longer needed, or you'd like to donate new goods, please consider mailing them my way and I will get them to the families:

Toys (the children range from newborn to six years old)

Bath towels/washclothes

Kitchen utensils

Pots and Pans

Drinking glasses

Toilet paper/paper towels

Shower curtains

Coffee Pots

Children's clothing

Diapers/wipes

Toothbrushes/hairbrushes

While I'm sharing the gospel of helping the homeless, let me share an inspiring story with you.

If you own SPIRITUAL APPLIANCES, you'll notice the cd booklet is dedicated to the homeless problem. And, there is also a close - up of a painting by Jo Ann Koepke, a woman who was homeless and found help through House the Homeless.

Well, Jo Ann is a wonderful woman who has had an extremely hard life. However, she has worked hard to turn her life around, and she is very inspiring. But because of physical abuse she suffered over the years, she now has severe seizures that are getting worse as she is getting older (I think she's 53 now.)

Several years ago, she began corresponding with a young homeless woman in Africa named Babi Ri. Babi's parents both died of AIDS, and she was left to wander the streets at the age of 12. Jo Ann saw her plight on TV, and started sending Babi $25 a month. Now, let me say here that when Jo Ann shared this with me, I got rather weepy. That is A LOT of money for Jo Ann. But she has grown to love Babi like a daughter... the amazing part of the story is that Babi now lives with an aunt, is getting ready to go to college, and saved up money to buy a cow ( a HUGE accomplishment in her village). The cow then had a calf, so Babi became a respected member of her community! Babi leads the whole village in prayer on behalf of her "mother", Jo Ann. Can you imagine? Can you imagine an entire village praying for you? Isn't that incredible love????!

Now, I have a tendency to listen to these ideas that God sparks inside my goofy brain...and I thought... wouldn't it be AWESOME to bring Babi Ri over to meet Jo Ann?

They love each other so much, and the fact that one homeless woman has helped another just blows me away. So, in the spring, I am going to throw a concert and raise money to bring Babi Ri over (...Jo Ann cannot travel because of her seizures). I hope you can all come to help celebrate this joyous occasion when the concert date is set.

I am waaaaay excited about it!

love,

sara

Hello, Merry Ones!

This weekend I start recording TODDLER, and let me just say I am beyond excited. (That's past Pluto, I think!)

Guess what? On November 15, there will be an auction on eBAY of a swell Epiphone guitar to benefit the HILL COUNTRY YOUTH RANCH. (http://www.youth-ranch.org/) The guitar was donated by Curtis Nichols, and many wonderful artists have signed it.

Some of those artists include: Shawn Colvin, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jimmy La Fave, Mary Cutrafello, Colin Boyd, Christine Albert, Arlo Guthrie, Sara Hickman... And I will be asking Charlie Sexton, Tish Hinojosa, Don Walser, Bob Schneider, Malford Milligan, Eric Johnson, The Austin Lounge Lizards, Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, MC Overlord, Dah-veed and many more. (If you can think of anyone else I could reach that would be willing to sign before November 15, let me know!)

I'm going to hand paint something groovy on the case, too!

I've never done eBay before, but I think it will work well and we are excited about the prospect of helping the Youth Ranch.

Thanks for all you do,

Love,

Sara Hickman

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

What a wonderful time of the year! Today we decorated our tree with lights and beautiful decorations, each one placed with love and care. The best part of trimming the tree for me is recalling the memory behind each ornament and talking about them with family. My oldest pieces are from my grandmother: tiny little ceramic bells. An angel with every ring!

First, I will share some news, and then I will close with a holiday story!

You may recall I wrote to you all about a guitar that will be auctioned off on E-Bay. It's officially happening on December 6! Just go to E-Bay, and, I believe, put in "Sara Hickman" as a search. The url is (cut and paste!!): http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=520488343

The guitar is an Epiphone, signed by a ton of Texas musicians---Kelly Willis, Eric Johnson, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, etc---and the inside of the case was handpainted by me! Whee! The highest bidder will win the guitar, and the monies will go to the Hill Country Youth Ranch! (This is the group that helps severely abused/neglected children.) Have fun bidding!

January 13, 2002...(note that says 2002, not 2001!)...I just got signed up to go on the Kerrville Cruise! I'm not sure yet who the other artists will be, but I can 99% tell you that Trout Fishing in America will definately be one of the other musical acts!

The solo CD has being mixed (Tuesday, Dec 5)...it'll be mastered on Thursday, Dec 7...I still hope to mail it out in time for Christmas...! To everyone who has sent in an order, doncha worry! Your name is sitting right here on my list, and I will package up your CD hot off the press ASAP!

TODDLER is coming along...I am expecting a January release...this has been a bit more complicated than the NEWBORN CD!

To everyone who wished me well (or wrote me a letter!), my Walk to Emmaus was uplifting, magical, loving and AWESOME. Four days to concentrate on God and the power of love. Thank you for thinking of me during that time!

And now a story...

Let me start by saying that I try to remember the spirit of Christmas all year long. Sometimes I get discouraged. The world can be so dark, and so hard. But I truly feel that each of us has a purpose, a higher calling, to remember each other and help one another when one of us needs that help. I don't know how you all will react to the following incident, but my friend, Todd, told me to talk about it. I carry you as my angels and I know that you were all there with me on this morning...

Two weeks ago, I drove up to my mailbox. It was a very, very cold, drizzly morning, around nine a.m. The gentleman who is usually behind the counter wasn't in, and, in fact, the building was unlit and the door closed. Outside, on the welcome mat, was a mass of blue. A thin looking sleeping bag, worn through, with the shape of a body underneath.

I sat in my car, watching the silent shape. I decided to go over and offer whoever was under the blanket the cash I had on me. I got out of my car, watching as my breath became frosty...

I stood over the sleeping person, and gently touched what I assumed was a back. "Hello? Excuse me..." I said, gently. "Hello?"

Nothing. Just a grumbly sort of snore. I began to feel awkward, and decided perhaps it was best to let the person sleep. I walked back to my car, opened the door, started to get behind the wheel, but I knew...it wasn't right. Then I started imagining the police being called, the person underneath the sleeping bag being awakened with a start, being asked to move...

So, I hustled back over, determined now. Again, I nudged the sleeping person, this time more urgently.

"Yes?" I heard a voice. And then the blanket began to move.

"Hello...I hate to disturb you...but it is awfully cold here...can I help you?" I asked.

A face lifted up into the morning light. A face covered in thick, blood-encrusted scabs. A swollen left eye. Hair unwashed, skin red and frozen. I leaned down closer to see how hurt he might be.

"Uh...no, no, that's ok, I'm fine," he said.

I held out the money I had and placed it in his roughened hand, and said, "Well, I'm sure you could at least use some cash?"

He was surprised.

"You look pretty banged up. How about I take you to Brackenridge, or a doctor?"

"No, really, this is enough. Thank you for the money. Thank you," he answered.

I introduced myself as he stood up, shaking in the cold. He had on a tee shirt, a sweater two sizes too small that couldn't even be buttoned across his chest, some jeans, socks and sneakers. No gloves. No hat. It was about 40 degrees...

I asked him his name, and he said Steve.

By then, some people had come out from an office down the way.

"Is everything ok?" they asked.

"Oh, yea," I said. "We were just about to go get some coffee..."

I introduced them to Steve, introduced myself, and they offered Steve their help if he needed any. Again, he refused.

The two of us walked around the corner to Starbucks. I will tell you, I was frightened they might not let us in. This man looked dirty, he looked scary, and he was having trouble walking. But no one said a thing as we approached the counter. Steve didn't want breakfast; he said his stomach couldn't hold anything down. But he longed for some hot coffee. We got some and sat down at a table.

I asked Steve to hang out for a few minutes, that I was going to go next door and get him a hat and gloves at Whole Earth Provisions.

But when I got there, the door was locked. I noticed two young men unpacking gear to bring into the store, and asked them if I could buy a few things for a man down on his luck. They refused, saying their computer was down. I said I would leave my credit card, or run across the street for cash. Still, they said no. They told me to come back in about half an hour when they were open.

So, I went back to hang out with Steve, and as you can guess, life had intervened. (In a wonderful way!) A young University of Texas nursing student was now sitting with him, counseling him about his wounds and telling him what he could do to keep them from getting infected. We talked about hospitals, how Steve visited them frequently. He told us he had been hit by a car on two seperate occassions, and was still healing from a set of broken ribs. His legs had both been broken, and although healed, he had trouble walking. We talked about his being homeless, about his family, about a wife he had down in Florida...he seemed lucid, and at times his eyes would fill with tears. I was grateful to the young woman for sitting with us, for caring about this stranger.

Finally, it was time. I told Steve we were going next door to go shopping! When we entered, the store was warm and full of SO MUCH STUFF!!! It hit me how a glass window, or door, is all that sometimes seperates humanity from the most basic of needs...

I started with Steve's head. We found him a beautiful, soft pull over hat that would cover his ears. I pulled it down over his greasy, messy tangles and asked him how it felt. "Mmm..." he smiled. "It feels warm!" He looked like a little boy.

Next, we found the gloves. I asked him to hold out his hands, and I placed gloves up to them until I found the right size. We slipped them on. "Just right!" he said.

I was starting to notice the prices. I didn't want to have to notice that, but I hadn't realized how expensive Whole Earth can be. I smiled at Steve and said, "My! Hold on a second..." I walked over to the man behind the counter, and realized it was one of the young men I had seen outside earlier. "Uh, do you have a jacket that is under $3000?" I joked.

He said, "Well, the jackets are all going to run you about $200...but we have some sweaters..."

Steve and I followed the storeclerk to the sweaters, and there were beautiful all-wool sweaters on the rack. I asked Steve if any stood out to him. He said, "Oh, wool is excellent. It keeps me warm when I get wet! I really don't care what color..."

I helped him take off his tiny little sweater, and gently folded it up. He held up his arms, gloves and all, and we slipped the new, large sweater over his head. He looked like a new man.

We walked over to the counter, and the man said, "You know, what you are doing is really amazing."

I quietly replied, "I couldn't stand it. What if that had been me? I would want someone to help me, too."

The clerk was looking past me, and I turned to see that Steve had tears running down his face.

"Thank you so much," he said. "Thank you."

It was everything I could do to keep from bursting in tears. At this moment, I felt like Christmas was everywhere.

The man behind the counter said, "Hold on a second..." He went and brought his manager out, and they gave us a thirty percent discount. I tell you, the feeling in that room was thick with love. It was getting contagious!!!

As we left, I gave Steve a hug out on the parking lot. I had asked him if there was anyone I could call, could I take him to the Salvation Army, but he refused every time. He wanted to find his friend, Jennifer, who had covered him at some point in the night with the sleeping bag. He wanted to find her to give it back.

Merry Christmas to you all. May God bless each of you in your lives, and thank you for all the love, support, cheer, enthusiasm, ideas, fun, feedback and joy you have shared with me in 2000. You have touched me with so much.

With Respect and Joy,

Sara

Hello, Fantastic Folks!!!

Just a little newsy update!

The guitar auction for the Hill Country Youth Ranch went wonderfully--it raised $2,025 for the Ranch! Thanks to all who participated, and to Curtis Nichols for donating the guitar!

---

Ok...here's the status on the solo CD...I've entitled it ONE FLOWER TO THE LEFT...

I had a dream in which someone handed me the CD itself, and when I looked down into my hands, that was the title printed on the jacket! So, I figured it was a sign and I better not mess with it!!! The cover artwork is a mandala I drew...and my friends, Caryl and Meredith, are hand printing each of the 500 jackets. I really hope y'all dig it, cuz this will be the first in a series...one each year. Anyway, it will be arriving in my house on DECEMBER 21, so I will rush to mail them out to each of you who have ordered them. I will try HARD to get them to you before CHRISTMAS! Eek!

TODDLER is coming along! I'd say I have about two more days of work...this Tuesday night I will be recording three five year olds who sing in French! Ooh-la-la! Expect a mid January release. Someone suggested I have the record release at Chuck E. Cheeses!

This February, the City of Austin is releasing a compilation CD for the Austin Visitors Bureau..."ON ANY GIVEN EVENING"... They have included BOWL FULL OF STARS from my SPIRITUAL APPLIANCES cd...others on the CD are the Gourds, the Asylum Street Spankers, Bob Schneider, Slaid Cleeves, Don Walser, Los Super Seven among others. I'm so excited to be included!

I'd also like to say I just cut up and canceled all my credit cards (except my two Visa cards.) I can not believe how many cards I had collected over the years---17!!! And I never even used them...you know, TARGET, MACY's, etc. Wow. It feels so good to get rid of it all.

Well, everyone...again, happy holidays! Wishing you all joyeux noelle!

Sara

p.s. On Christmas eve and Christmas morning, catch me singing Christmas tunes on KXAN-TV and FOX!!! (in Austin)
